Getting Started
Everything you need to know to download RAGEMP, connect to the server, create your account, and take your first steps in Los Santos. This guide walks you through the entire process from start to finish.
What You'll Need
Before you can join the server, you need a few things ready. The good news is that most of this is free and straightforward to set up.
Requirements
- A copy of GTA V (Steam, Epic Games, or Rockstar Launcher)
- RAGEMP - a free multiplayer mod for GTA V
- A computer that can run GTA V smoothly
Minimum System Requirements
- OS: Windows 10 64-bit or later
- CPU: Intel Core i5-3470 or AMD FX-8350
- RAM: 8 GB
- GPU: NVIDIA GTX 660 2GB or AMD Radeon HD 7870 2GB
- Storage: 72 GB available space (GTA V) + 500 MB (RAGEMP)
- Network: Stable broadband internet connection
TIP
You do not need a microphone. This is a text-based roleplay server, so all communication happens through typing. Just bring your keyboard and your imagination.
Step 1: Download RAGEMP
RAGEMP is a free multiplayer modification that lets you play GTA V on custom servers. It is safe, free, and widely used by the GTA roleplay community.
1
Visit the RAGEMP Website
Open your web browser and go to
rage.mp. This is the official website for the RAGEMP multiplayer client.
2
Download the Client
Click the download button on the main page. The download is completely free. The file is a small installer, usually around 30 MB.
3
Run the Installer
Open the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions. The installer will automatically detect where GTA V is installed on your computer.
4
Point to Your GTA V Folder
If the installer cannot find GTA V automatically, you will need to browse to your GTA V installation folder manually. This is usually found in your Steam or Epic Games library folder.
TIP
Make sure GTA V is already installed and has been launched at least once in single-player mode before installing RAGEMP. This ensures all required game files are present.
Step 2: Connect to the Server
Now that RAGEMP is installed, you can connect to the Roleplay Project server. This only takes a moment.
1
Open RAGEMP
Launch RAGEMP from your desktop shortcut or start menu. It will open a launcher window.
2
Click Direct Connect
At the top of the RAGEMP launcher, you will see a "Direct Connect" option. Click on it to open the address field.
3
Enter the Server Address
Type in the server address shown below and click Connect.
Server Address
play.roleplayproject.net:22005
4
Wait for the Game to Load
The game will start loading. The first time you connect, it may take a bit longer while it downloads server files. Be patient and let it finish.
IMPORTANT
If you get a connection error, make sure your GTA V is fully up to date. Verify your game files through Steam or the Epic Games launcher. Also check that your firewall is not blocking RAGEMP.
Step 3: Create Your Account
When you first connect to the server, you will see a login screen. Since this is your first time, you need to create an account.
1
Open the Registration Form
On the login screen, click "Register" to switch to the account creation form.
2
Choose Your Credentials
Pick a username and a strong, secure password. Your username is how staff and the system will identify your account. It is not your character's name.
3
Complete Registration
Fill in any remaining fields and submit the form. You can also register through the
User Control Panel on our website if you prefer.
IMPORTANT
The server is currently in early Alpha. You need an invite from an existing member to register. Public registrations are offline at this time. Reach out to a current player or check our community channels for invite availability.
TIP
Use a unique password that you do not use on any other website or service. This keeps your account safe.
Step 4: Create Your First Character
After logging in, the server will ask you to create a character. This is the person you will be playing as in the game world. Take your time here because your character is the foundation of your roleplay experience.
1
Pick a Realistic Name
Choose a believable first and last name for your character. Think of a name that a real person might have. Do not use celebrity names, joke names, or anything obviously unrealistic.
2
Write a Short Backstory
Give your character a brief history. Where did they come from? Why are they in Los Santos? A few sentences is enough to get started. This helps you stay in character during roleplay.
3
Customize Appearance
Use the character creator to set your character's physical appearance. You can adjust facial features, body type, and starting outfit.
TIP
Your first character does not need to be perfect. You can always create additional characters later. Start simple and build your story as you go.
For a more detailed guide on making a great character, read the Character Creation Guide.
Step 5: Your First Steps in Los Santos
You have made it into the game. Now what? Here is what to do when you first arrive in the city.
1
Look Around
Take a moment to explore the area around you. Get a feel for where things are. Walk around the streets and pay attention to landmarks.
2
Talk to Other Players
Walk up to other players and introduce yourself in character. Just type in the chat to speak as your character. Remember, everything you say should be something your character would actually say.
3
Learn the Basic Commands
Try out these basic commands to get comfortable:
- Regular chat - your character speaks out loud to nearby players
- /me [action] - describe what your character is physically doing
- /do [description] - describe something about the environment or situation
- /b [message] - speak out of character to nearby players
- /report [message] - send a message to an admin if you need help
4
Find a Job
Your character will need money. Look for job locations around the city or ask other players where to find work. Jobs are a great way to meet people and earn money at the same time. Check the
Economy Guide for more details.
